The JVC Everio GZMG21 is a good choice for the first time buyer, or "home user" looking for an easy to use, low cost camcorder. The 20GB HDD provides about 4.5 hours of "high-quality" MPEG-2 video, and much more if you set it to record at a lower quality, for web use or emailing to friends and family. The interface is very easy to use, with a large, vibrant LCD displaying all the necessary information, and buttons clearly labeled with unmistakable icons. Most users will want to stick to "Auto" mode, where the camera figures the best settings for itself, and allows you to enjoy the action instead of worrying if the picture is slightly out of focus, or over exposed. The only settings you will want to play around with are the 4:3 (full screen) or 16:9 (wide screen) options, and the picture quality; both of which are easy to find and change. For the more adventurous, you can set the camera to manual mode and play around with some more settings. I find this rather unnecessary for a camera of this type, but still, it's nice to have options.Once connected via USB to a computer, you can find your recorded video on the HDD, join the segments with the included software and begin to edit them. This is where the downsides start. The camera records in a proprietary MPEG-2 format, which means you'll need to convert it before you can edit in any application other than the bundled software... which you'll most likely want to, as it is very basic, and not the easiest program to use. Converting to a standard MPEG-2 format takes practically no time at all, and allows you to put your movie straight into a DVD authoring package, but I prefer to convert my files into DV for editing, which can take awhile. My only other complaint is that the colour quality of the pictures produced isn't quite what I'd hoped, but I'm sure it's something most people wouldn't notice, and can probably be improved my changing some of the settings.Overall, I think a miniDV camcorder allows the most flexibility, but for the less technically minded, or those on a tighter budget, the GZMG21 does just fine, and is probably better suited to generating web-content.One final note; the included battery only last 60 minutes, so you may want to invest in a spare one... or two.
